Material is my book on painting in the post-AI era. The argument is small enough to state here: painting is a material practice, and the material is the argument, because the material remembers and the algorithm does not.
It runs from a prologue in a small studio in Toledo through chapters on material, the gaze, photography and the algorithm, the face under cloth, the painter as researcher, reduction, and algorithmic refusal, and it ends in a set of plates. I wrote it alongside the paintings, not about them.
